Tampa Bay Lightning vs New York Rangers Prediction
Game Preview: The Lightning (44-26-5) visit the Rangers (36-32-7) at Madison Square Garden. Tampa Bay has already clinched a playoff spot, but they enter this game on a two-game losing streak and will be eager to bounce back. Their high-powered offense (top-5 in goals per game this season) has gone a bit cold lately, scoring just 3 goals total in the last two games. Meanwhile, New York is fighting for its playoff life – they sit just outside the Wild Card and need a win. The Rangers were shut out 4-0 by New Jersey over the weekend, snapping a brief two-game win streak. At home, however, the Rangers have won two in a row and historically have given Tampa trouble at MSG (the Lightning have lost three straight in New York, scoring only one goal in each of those games). Igor Shesterkin and Andrei Vasilevskiy should be the starting goalies, a matchup of two elite netminders. Neither team reports any major new injuries – Tampa Bay is healthy, and New York’s lineup is mostly intact (depth forward Matt Rempe remains out). With the Lightning slight -140 favorites on the road, this game projects to be competitive and tightly contested.
Moneyline: The Rangers (+120) home underdog is a live value pick. Tampa Bay is the better team on paper, but New York’s desperation and home-ice advantage make an upset very possible. The Lightning haven’t fared well at MSG recently, and the Rangers have won their last two at home. At plus money, taking the Rangers to win outright offers a solid payoff in what should be a close game. (If you prefer the favorite, the Lightning at -140 are reasonable given their talent, but the slim odds aren’t as enticing.)
Puck Line: Rangers +1.5 (-200) is a safe play to get a goal of insurance. New York has kept games close, and with Shesterkin in net they can certainly force a one-goal game or better. Tampa’s offense has been a bit subdued, so it’s unlikely they blow out the Rangers here. Laying -1.5 with Tampa Bay at plus odds is tempting if you expect a bounce-back blowout, but the safer choice is Rangers +1.5 to cover in a tight contest.
Total (O/U 5.5): Over 5.5 goals (-110) is our lean. Despite two top-tier goalies on the ice, there’s plenty of offensive talent to push this total over. The Lightning boast Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point and Steven Stamkos, fueling the league’s 2nd-best offense (3.56 goals/game). The Rangers have scored 4+ goals in three of their last four outings at home. Their previous meeting saw 8 total goals (Tampa won 6-2). New York’s defense has wobbled lately (4+ goals allowed in three of the last four), and Tampa’s power play is dangerous. A 3-3 type game gets this over the number, so we’ll ride with the over in the Lightning vs Rangers matchup.
Best Player Props:
-
Nikita Kucherov – Over 0.5 Assists: Kucherov is an elite playmaker and one of the NHL’s assist leaders. He quarterbacks Tampa’s top power-play unit and has at least one assist in 8 of his last 10 games. Against a Rangers team that can be penalty-prone, Kucherov’s vision gives him a great chance to notch a helper tonight.
-
Mika Zibanejad – Over 3.5 Shots on Goal: Zibanejad will be firing the puck for New York in this must-win game. He leads the Rangers in shots per game and tends to shoot even more at home. Facing a Lightning defense that allows a decent number of perimeter shots, Zibanejad should tally 4+ shots as he looks to break through against Vasilevskiy.
(Also consider Artemi Panarin Over 0.5 points – Panarin is the Rangers’ top scorer and will likely factor in if their offense produces. He had a 5-game point streak before the New Jersey shutout.)
Best Bet (Lightning vs Rangers): Over 5.5 Goals. Both squads have the offensive weapons to light the lamp despite the marquee goalie duel. With the Rangers in desperation mode, we expect an up-tempo game and enough scoring chances to reach six or more total goals. The over is the best bet in this clash, as a 4-3 type of outcome feels very plausible.
St. Louis Blues vs Winnipeg Jets Prediction
Game Preview: The Blues (43-28-7) head into Winnipeg riding an incredible 12-game winning streak. This red-hot St. Louis team has surged into a wild card spot on the strength of an explosive offense (4.25 goals per game during the streak) and improved goaltending from Jordan Binnington. Binnington is 7-0-0 with a 1.84 GAA in his last seven starts, providing stability behind the Blues’ scoring outburst. On the other side, the Winnipeg Jets (52-21-4) have been one of the league’s top teams all season and currently sit atop the Central Division (even leading the Presidents’ Trophy race). However, the Jets have cooled off slightly, going 1-2 on their recent road trip and scoring only 2.0 goals per game over their last three contests. Winnipeg dropped a 4-1 game on Saturday and will be eager to rebound at home, where they own a dominant 28-6-4 record. Star goalie Connor Hellebuyck has been stellar (43-12-3, 2.04 GAA, .924 SV%) and should get the start, giving the Jets a big edge in net. The Jets might be without winger Nikolaj Ehlers (day-to-day, lower body) who is third on the team in points – his status is questionable, and his absence would hurt Winnipeg’s scoring depth. Even so, the Jets have plenty of weapons and strong home trends against St. Louis. This could even be a first-round playoff preview if the Blues secure a wild card. Winnipeg is a -165 favorite to end the Blues’ streak tonight.
Moneyline: Jets (-165) to win is the pick. As impressive as St. Louis has been, winning 12 in a row, extending that streak in Winnipeg is a tall task. The Jets are elite on home ice and have a huge goaltending advantage with Hellebuyck. St. Louis has been scoring in bunches, but many of those wins came against non-elite competition. Winnipeg’s defense and netminding are the best the Blues have faced in weeks. It’s a pricey ML, but backing the Jets to snap the Blues’ streak is justified given Winnipeg’s overall quality and motivation (they’re pushing to clinch the top seed).
Puck Line: Jets -1.5 (+150) offers attractive plus-money value. If Winnipeg wins, there’s a good chance they could do so by 2 or more goals. The Jets have covered the -1.5 puck line in 7 of their last 10 home games against St. Louis. Hellebuyck’s career numbers versus the Blues are excellent (16-6-2, ~2.08 GAA), and Binnington has struggled historically against Winnipeg (3-7-1, ~3.09 GAA). If Ehlers sits, that’s a concern for Jets’ offense, but they still have Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, and Pierre-Luc Dubois to generate goals. The Blues’ magical run feels due for a letdown, and we expect a focused Jets team to make a statement with a multi-goal victory. Taking Winnipeg -1.5 at +150 is a solid high-reward play here.
Total (O/U 5.5): Under 5.5 goals (-120) is the lean in what could become a playoff-style defensive battle. Both teams have been getting strong goaltending – Binnington is hot and Hellebuyck has been consistently excellent. The last time these teams met, goals were at a premium (recent Blues vs Jets matchups have trended under, with a 3-4-3 O/U record in their last 10 meetings). Winnipeg has seen the under hit in 7 of their last 10 games overall. St. Louis, despite scoring a lot lately, will likely play a bit tighter knowing how dangerous the Jets can be. With the Jets’ defense clamping down (2nd fewest goals against in NHL) and the Blues potentially cooling off against a top opponent, a 3-2 type game is a reasonable expectation. We’ll side with the under 5.5 in this one.
Best Player Props:
-
Kyle Connor – Anytime Goal Scorer: Connor leads the Jets with 44 goals this season and is always a threat, especially on home ice. He has a knack for finding soft spots in coverage against St. Louis (historically he’s done well vs the Blues). With Ehlers possibly out, Connor may shoot even more. Back him to light the lamp in a pivotal game.
-
Jordan Kyrou – Over 2.5 Shots on Goal: Kyrou has been a driving force during the Blues’ win streak, using his speed and skill to generate chances. He’s averaging well over 3 shots per game lately and will be one of the few Blues forwards able to test Hellebuyck consistently. Expect Kyrou to continue firing the puck, even if many are saved – 3+ shots is very reachable.
(Also consider Mark Scheifele Over 0.5 Points – Scheifele is Winnipeg’s top center with 75 points and will be involved in the offense. He’s a good bet to register at least one point, via either a goal or setup, especially if the Jets offense wakes up.)
Best Bet (Blues vs Jets): Jets Moneyline. Winnipeg is a strong favorite for good reason – they’re at home, have the edge in goal, and have plenty of motivation to halt the Blues’ run. While the Blues have been a great story, the safest bet is the Jets simply to win the game. Lay the moderate juice on Winnipeg to take care of business on home ice and end St. Louis’s streak at 12.
Edmonton Oilers vs Anaheim Ducks Prediction
Game Preview: The Oilers (44-27-5) and Ducks (33-35-8) meet in Anaheim in a Pacific Division tilt that looks lopsided on paper. Edmonton is gearing up for the playoffs and boasts one of the league’s most potent offenses, while Anaheim is finishing another rebuilding year out of the playoff picture. Both teams are on the second night of a back-to-back set and coming off rough outings on Sunday. The Oilers were shut out 3-0 by Los Angeles last night, a rare off-night for an Edmonton team that usually scores at will. Superstar Connor McDavid and company will be eager to rebound offensively. Keep an eye on Edmonton’s goaltending situation: starter Stuart Skinner missed last game (head injury), so the Oilers might go with backup Jack Campbell or call-up Calvin Pickard tonight. Fatigue could be a factor, but at least travel is minimal (they played in LA and now in Anaheim). The Ducks, meanwhile, were trounced 6-2 by Vancouver on Sunday, extending a stretch of inconsistent defense. Anaheim’s young team has shown flashes but ranks near the bottom in goals against. Goalie Lukas Dostal has been starting with John Gibson sidelined; Dostal has performed admirably at times but faces a tough task versus Edmonton’s firepower. The Ducks do have some bright spots like Trevor Zegras and Troy Terry, but they’ve gone 4-5-1 in their last 10 and struggle against top-tier teams. Edmonton won the previous meetings and comes in as a -150 favorite despite playing last night. This Oilers vs Ducks pick centers on whether Edmonton’s talent will outweigh any fatigue.
Moneyline: Oilers (-150) to win is the recommended play. Edmonton is simply the superior team in every facet: offense led by McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, a power play that’s among the league’s best, and more to play for (the Oilers are still jockeying for playoff positioning). The back-to-back situation and question mark in goal do introduce some risk, but the Ducks are also on a back-to-back and have an even shakier defense. Anaheim has lost five of their last seven games and gave up 6 goals less than 24 hours ago. Unless the Oilers completely run out of gas, they should secure the victory. At -150, Edmonton’s moneyline offers solid value for a far better squad that will be hungry to rebound from last night’s shutout.
Puck Line: Oilers -1.5 (+160) is a high-upside option if you expect Edmonton to romp. When the Oilers win, they often win big – they have the offensive capability to bury weaker opponents. In their last matchup in Anaheim, the Oilers won by multiple goals. McDavid and Draisaitl can blow a game open in a hurry, especially against the Ducks’ 30th-ranked defense and abysmal penalty kill (around 73%). The main concern is fatigue, which could keep the score closer. But given Anaheim’s defensive breakdowns and the fact Edmonton lost yesterday (meaning they’ll be extra motivated), a puck line cover (e.g. a 5-2 or 4-2 win) is very much in play. At +160, it’s a worthwhile gamble on an Oilers bounce-back blowout.
Total (O/U 6.5): Over 6.5 goals (-115) is our pick in what could turn into a free-flowing, high-scoring affair. The Oilers are usually a good over team – they score 3.5+ goals per game (top 5 offense) but also can give up goals, especially if their backup goalie is in. The Ducks average about 3 goals against per game and just allowed six last night. Tired legs on both sides could lead to defensive lapses. The last time these teams met, the total sailed over. Unless the Oilers show signs of heavy fatigue, they alone could put up 5+ goals on Anaheim’s porous defense. The Ducks might chip in a couple themselves (Edmonton’s defense isn’t impenetrable, especially not on a back-to-back). A projected score in the range of 5-3 or 5-2 gets this over 6.5. Ride the over, as neither side showed defensive sharpness a day ago.
Best Player Props:
-
Connor McDavid – Over 1.5 Points: McDavid was held off the scoresheet last night, which is a rarity. The MVP front-runner tends to explode following quiet games. He’s still averaging well over 1.5 points per game on the season. Against a Ducks team he’s dominated historically, expect McDavid to orchestrate the offense and likely tally multiple points (goals or assists). He could easily have a 2 or 3-point night leading his team’s rebound effort.
-
Leon Draisaitl – Anytime Goal Scorer: Draisaitl comes in hot despite the team loss, having scored twice on Saturday. He’s Edmonton’s trigger man on the power play and has a lethal one-timer that the Ducks had trouble containing in past meetings. With Anaheim’s penalty kill struggling, Draisaitl is a prime candidate to cash in a goal (or two). He has 50+ goals on the season and is a good bet to find the back of the net against a leaky Ducks defense.
-
Trevor Zegras – Over 0.5 Points: If the Ducks manage to score a few, Zegras is often involved. He leads Anaheim in points and will be facing an Oilers defense that can yield quality chances. In what could be a high-scoring game, banking on Zegras to register at least one point (goal or assist) is reasonable, especially if Edmonton’s goaltending is not at full strength.
Best Bet (Oilers vs Ducks): Over 6.5 Goals. The safest play in this matchup is the total going over. Edmonton’s offense will be on a mission after getting blanked, and Anaheim’s defensive woes should give the Oilers plenty of scoring opportunities. Even if the Ducks keep it semi-competitive, a 5-2 or 5-3 type of game feels likely, pushing the total past 6.5. Count on plenty of action and goals in Anaheim, with the over as the top bet.
Seattle Kraken vs Los Angeles Kings Prediction
Game Preview: The Kraken (33-38-6) travel to LA to face the Kings (45-23-9) at Crypto.com Arena. Seattle has had a disappointing season after last year’s playoff appearance – they have been eliminated from contention, sitting second-to-last in the Pacific. That said, the Kraken have shown some fight lately, winning two straight including a 5-1 victory over San Jose in their last outing. Jared McCann led the way in that game (2 goals, 1 assist) and remains Seattle’s top scoring threat. Offense hasn’t been the biggest issue for Seattle (they rank mid-pack in goals), but defense and goaltending have let them down all year. The Kraken are 21st in goals against, and goalie Philipp Grubauer had a rough season (7-17-1, 3.52 GAA) before essentially losing the net to Joey Daccord. Daccord (26-20-5, 2.63 GAA, .910 SV%) has been respectable and likely starts here. On the Kings’ side, Los Angeles has been one of the league’s most consistent teams. They’ve already clinched a playoff spot and currently sit 2nd in the Pacific Division, riding a four-game winning streak. LA is coming off a 3-0 shutout win over Edmonton last night, where trade-deadline pickup Darcy Kuemper stopped all 27 shots. The Kings’ identity is defense: they rank 2nd in goals against and shots against per game. Offensively, they’re balanced but not high-octane (around 18th in goals per game). Adrian Kempe (64 points) and Anze Kopitar (62 points) lead the team in scoring. With this being the second of a back-to-back for LA, we might see backup David Rittich in goal, though Kuemper could also go again given his shutout. Either way, LA is a heavy -225 favorite and has more on the line, looking to possibly catch Vegas for first place or at least secure home ice in round one. Seattle will play loose and could play spoiler, but the Kings have dominated defensively in recent games.
Moneyline: Kings (-225) are the clear pick to win, but straight up it’s very chalky. Los Angeles has more talent and motivation, and they’ve beaten Seattle at home already this season. The Kraken’s recent mini-surge doesn’t outweigh the season-long gap between these teams. Barring a surprise, LA should secure a fifth straight win. Because the odds are so steep, you might include the Kings in a parlay rather than betting the ML solo. Seattle at +185 is a long shot – with nothing to play for except pride, an upset is possible but not likely against a locked-in Kings squad.
Puck Line: Kings -1.5 (+110) is a solid bet given LA’s defensive edge. The Kings have won four straight games by an average of 2.5 goals, and each of those wins was by at least two goals. Their stingy defense often frustrates opponents, leading to multi-goal wins when LA capitalizes on chances. Seattle has little to lose and may press, which could lead to mistakes the Kings can exploit. Los Angeles beat Edmonton by 3 goals last night; a similar 2+ goal margin against a weaker Kraken team is very feasible. Look for a score like 4-1 or 3-1 in favor of LA, which would comfortably cover the -1.5 puck line at plus money.
Total (O/U 5.5): Under 5.5 goals (-115) is the play here. The Kings’ style, especially at home, lends itself to lower-scoring games. They have the NHL’s 2nd-best goals-against average, and if Darcy Kuemper is in net again, goals will be hard to come by for Seattle. Even if Rittich starts, the Kraken offense isn’t intimidating enough to expect an outburst. Seattle has scored four or more in 5 of their last 9, but those came against weaker defensive teams. Against LA’s structured system, we anticipate Seattle being held to 2 or fewer goals. The Kings themselves might not need to score a ton – they often win games 3-1, 4-1. Kempe and Fiala provide offense, but LA is content to play a tight, controlled game and wait for Seattle to crack. All signs point to a total around 5 goals or fewer. Take the under 5.5 in this one.
Best Player Props:
-
Adrian Kempe – Anytime Goal Scorer: Kempe leads the Kings with 36 goals and is their most frequent shooter. He’s scored in four of the last six games and had a goal in the previous Kraken-Kings meeting. Facing a shaky Kraken defense/goaltending, Kempe’s speed and shot are good bets to produce a goal.
-
Kevin Fiala – Over 2.5 Shots on Goal: Fiala has been an impact player since returning from injury, and he’s not shy about shooting. He had a goal on 5 shots last night. The Kings will likely generate a decent shot total against Seattle, and Fiala should hit at least 3 shots as a key weapon on LA’s second line and power play.
-
Jared McCann – Over 0.5 Points: McCann is Seattle’s best finisher (he has 35 goals this year) and comes off a three-point night. While we do expect LA to limit Seattle, if the Kraken manage to score a goal or two, McCann is the most probable contributor. A garbage-time goal or power-play point from McCann could sneak him onto the scoresheet even if Seattle loses. In a game where the Kraken might only get one goal, he’s the likeliest to have a hand in it.
Best Bet (Kraken vs Kings): Kings -1.5 Puck Line. Los Angeles’s defensive dominance and recent form suggest they should win comfortably. The Kraken have struggled all year to beat strong defensive teams. With LA still pushing for optimal playoff position, expect a professional effort and a multi-goal win. The puck line at plus odds is the best value given LA’s heavy favorite status.
Calgary Flames vs San Jose Sharks Prediction
Game Preview: The Flames (36-27-13) face the Sharks (20-46-10) at the SAP Center in San Jose in a matchup of teams headed in opposite directions. Calgary is in a dogfight for a Western Conference wild card spot and cannot afford to slip up against one of the league’s bottom-dwellers. The Flames have 85 points and have gone 4-1-1 in their last six, including a 4-1 win over Anaheim in their previous game. Offense has been Calgary’s weak point this season – surprisingly, they rank just 30th in the NHL in goals scored (only 194 goals in 76 games). However, they found some spark against the Ducks and will look to build on that against another porous defense. Calgary’s defense and goaltending have been decent, allowing 218 goals. Notably, the Flames have turned to top prospect Dustin Wolf in net recently, giving Jacob Markstrom some rest. Wolf won his last start and has been solid in limited action. On the Sharks’ side, it’s been a season to forget. San Jose sits last in the West with only 50 points and comes into tonight on a five-game losing streak. They played hard in a 3-2 loss to Edmonton on Saturday but overall have lost 8 of the last 10. The Sharks’ defense is the NHL’s worst – they’ve surrendered 280 goals (nearly 3.7 per game) and have especially struggled on the penalty kill (around 74% success). Offensively, San Jose has young players like William Eklund getting opportunities, but veterans Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl still lead the team in scoring. In net, the Sharks have been using Alexandar Georgiev after acquiring him mid-season; he’s an upgrade in goal but has been dealing with a minor injury (listed day-to-day). If Georgiev can’t go, backup Kappo Kahkonen might start, which wouldn’t inspire much confidence for San Jose. Calgary is the -185 road favorite in this game and has every incentive to play with urgency against a team they should beat.
Moneyline: Flames (-185) to win is the straightforward pick. Calgary simply has more talent and motivation. They know dropping this game could be a deathblow to their playoff hopes, so expect a focused effort. The Flames have won 4 of their last 5 as a favorite and are 4-1 in their last five games when laying -150 to -200 on the road (they tend to take care of business in these spots). San Jose has lost five straight overall and is only 8-26-4 at home this year – the worst home record in the NHL. The Sharks have very little offensive punch and even less to play for aside from pride. It would be a major upset if Calgary doesn’t win. While -185 odds aren’t cheap, Flames ML is a solid parlay anchor or can be laid straight if you’re okay with the juice.
Puck Line: Flames -1.5 (+135) is a good bet given Calgary’s need for a decisive win and San Jose’s propensity for multi-goal losses. The Sharks have dropped 4 of their last 5 games by at least two goals. Calgary’s offense isn’t usually explosive, but the Sharks’ defense tends to make even average offenses look good. In their two prior meetings this season, Calgary won by 3 goals each time. The Flames should control play (San Jose gets outshot heavily by most teams), and if Dustin Wolf plays well in net, Calgary could pull away. A 4-2 or 4-1 Flames victory is a reasonable projection, which would cover the puck line. At +135, the reward is worth the risk against a struggling Sharks squad.
Total (O/U 5.5): Under 5.5 goals (-110) is slightly favored in what might be a one-sided but not high-scoring game. The Flames, as noted, have difficulty scoring at times and might not need to hit this over if they clamp down defensively. Calgary has allowed 2 or fewer goals in four of their last six games. If Wolf (or Markstrom) holds the Sharks to 1-2 goals, the under is in great shape. San Jose’s offense is 29th in the league; they often score only 1 or 2 in losses. On the flip side, the Sharks’ defense can single-handedly ruin an under by conceding too many, but Calgary’s lack of finishing touch could keep the score moderate. Trends: The under is 5-1 in the Flames’ last 6 games as a road favorite, and the Sharks have gone under in 4 of their last 5 overall. We’ll lean under 5.5, expecting something like 4-1 (which cashes both Flames -1.5 and the under).
Best Player Props:
-
Elias Lindholm – Over 0.5 Points: Lindholm centers Calgary’s top line and top power play, and he’s one of the more consistent offensive contributors on a team that spreads out scoring. He has 3 points in his last 3 games and usually performs against weaker opponents. Facing the Sharks’ league-worst defense, Lindholm should at least get on the scoresheet with a goal or assist.
-
Logan Couture – Over 2.5 Shots on Goal: As the Sharks’ captain and one of their only proven scorers, Couture is still firing pucks even as the losses pile up. He’s averaged around 3 shots per game over the last couple of weeks. Calgary tends to allow a fair number of shots from the outside, and Couture will be trying to spark his team. In what could be a game where San Jose is trailing (and thus shooting often to catch up), look for Couture to register 3+ shots.
(Also consider Jonathan Huberdeau Over 0.5 Assists – Huberdeau’s playmaking has been underwhelming this year, but he had a helper last game and could exploit San Jose’s defensive lapses to set up a teammate. At least one Flames goal coming from a Huberdeau setup is a decent prop in this matchup.)
Best Bet (Flames vs Sharks): Flames -1.5 Puck Line. Calgary has every reason to win big, and San Jose frequently loses by multiple goals. The Flames’ offense may finally get a chance to shine against a very weak Sharks defense. Look for Calgary to take control early and for their superior depth to wear down San Jose. Laying -1.5 goals gives a nice plus payout and is the top play as Calgary should win comfortably in regulation.
FAQ – NHL Betting Tips & Common Questions
Q: What is the puck line in NHL betting?
A: The puck line is hockey’s version of a point spread, typically set at -1.5 goals for the favorite and +1.5 goals for the underdog. If you bet a team on the puck line -1.5, that team must win by 2 or more goals for the bet to cash. If you take a team at +1.5, they can lose by 1 goal or win outright and you’ll win the bet. Puck line bets often have higher payouts on the favorite and lower payouts on the underdog compared to moneyline odds. For example, in Lightning vs Rangers, Tampa might be -1.5 (+180) – meaning if the Lightning win by 2+, a $100 bet wins $180. The Rangers would be +1.5 (-220) – you’d have to lay $220 to win $100, but you get that 1-goal cushion. The puck line is a popular way to get better odds on favorites or to play it safer with underdogs in NHL betting.
Q: How do moneyline odds work in hockey?
A: A moneyline bet in hockey is simply wagering on which team will win the game outright (including overtime/shootout). The odds are presented with a favorite (minus sign) and underdog (plus sign). For instance, if the Oilers are -150 against the Ducks, you must risk $150 to win $100 on Edmonton. If the Ducks are +130, a $100 bet on Anaheim would profit $130 if they win. The larger the minus number, the bigger the favorite; the larger the plus number, the bigger the underdog. Moneyline odds include overtime and shootouts – whichever team prevails in the end will cash the bet. It’s the most straightforward NHL bet: just pick the winner. In our previews above, we often identify a moneyline pick (e.g., “Jets (-165) to win”) when we have confidence in a team’s chances of victory.
Q: What does O/U mean in hockey betting, and should I bet the over or under?
A: O/U stands for Over/Under, which is a bet on the total number of goals scored by both teams in a game. Sportsbooks set a total (for example, 5.5 or 6.5 goals, as we saw with tonight’s lines), and you can bet “over” if you think more goals will be scored than that number, or “under” if you expect a tighter, low-scoring game. For instance, in the Flames vs Sharks game, the over/under is 5.5. If 6 or more total goals are scored, over bettors win; if 5 or fewer, under bettors win. Whether to bet the over or under depends on factors like team playing styles, goaltending, and recent trends. High-scoring teams or weak defensive matchups often lead to good over bets. Conversely, strong goalies or defensive-minded teams make unders attractive. Always research stats: goals per game, goals against, power play and penalty kill performance, and head-to-head results. In our analysis above, we leaned over 6.5 for Oilers-Ducks (expecting a shootout) and under 5.5 for Kings-Kraken (expecting a defensive battle). The choice to bet over or under should align with your expectation of game flow and scoring chances.
Q: What are NHL player prop bets?
A: NHL player props are wagers on individual player achievements in a game, rather than the game’s final outcome. Common NHL player props include:
-
Anytime Goal Scorer: Betting on a specific player to score a goal in the game (at any time). For example, betting on Brayden Point to score a goal at any point during Lightning vs Rangers.
-
Over/Under on Points: Wagering if a player will get over or under a certain number of points (goals + assists). For instance, Connor McDavid Over 1.5 points means you need 2+ points from him to win.
-
Over/Under on Shots on Goal: Betting a player will have over or under a set number of shots. E.g., Elias Pettersson Over 3.5 shots – you need 4 or more shots from him.
-
Goaltender Saves: Betting on a goalie’s total saves (over/under a number). For example, Igor Shesterkin Over 29.5 saves would require 30+ saves.
Player props allow you to focus on individual performances. They’re great if you have insight into player matchups or trends – like a star on a hot streak or a particular player who always scores against a certain team. In our previews, we highlighted NHL player props such as Leon Draisaitl to score a goal or Kevin Fiala over 2.5 shots. These bets add extra excitement, as you can cash in on a prediction even if the team you like doesn’t win the game. Always consider things like line combinations, power-play role, and recent form when choosing player props.
Q: How can I find the best NHL bets today?
A: Finding the best NHL bets today requires a mix of research, analysis, and sometimes trusting expert opinions. Here are some tips:
-
Study Matchups: Look at each game on the schedule and note important factors – injuries, team form (winning/losing streaks), home vs away records, rest (is either team on a back-to-back?), and head-to-head history. This will help identify edges, like a strong home favorite or a live underdog.
-
Analyze Odds: Compare the odds to your own expectations. If you think a team has a better chance to win than the odds imply, that moneyline might be a best bet. Likewise, check totals – if two high-scoring teams with shaky goaltending are facing off, the over could be a top bet. We used this approach in selecting our best bets (e.g., seeing value in Rangers +120 at home or an over 5.5 in a matchup of offensive teams).
-
Read Expert Picks: Resources like betting previews (similar to this article) and analyst predictions can provide insight you might have missed. Experts often highlight key angles – maybe a certain team is 8-2 in its last 10 as an underdog, or a goalie has a great record against an opponent. Our article aimed to do exactly that for tonight’s games, pointing out the best bets for each.
-
Check Player News: Late news about a star player resting or a goalie change can shift what the best bet is. Always do a last-minute scan of NHL news on game day. For example, if a backup goalie unexpectedly starts, the over or the opposing team’s chances might improve.
-
Bet Responsibly: Even the “best” bets are not sure things – there’s always risk. It’s wise to focus on a few top plays rather than bet every game. In our analysis, we identified one “Best Bet” per game (the wager we feel strongest about) – you might choose to only bet those strongest angles rather than everything.
In summary, the best NHL bets on any given day come from diligent research and picking your spots. Use previews like this, stay informed, and you’ll improve your ability to find value in the daily NHL odds. Good luck!
