The reigning national champions #3 Georgia Bulldogs opens the season Saturday against No. 11 Oregon in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. This is the first time these teams meet since 1977. Georgia finished last season with a 14-1 record while the Ducks ended 10-4.
The Ducks had a 14-1 record last season and while they won all of their games at home they were only 3-2 on the road but beat one of the toughest teams in the nation, the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Offensively, the team averaged 31.4 points per game and recorded 3,098 passing yards and 2.833 rushing yards but the offensive team leaders were drafted to the NFL or transfered to other teams. This season, they welcome a new quarterback who transferred from Auburn. Nix registered 2,294 yds, 11 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions with a 61% in passes completed. They also get Caleb Chapman from Texas A&M and still have Troy Franklin.
Defensively, the team allowed an average of 27 points per game last season and the good news for this season is that they have a new head coach in Dan Lanning who was a defensive coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs and he know them really good.
#3 Georgia had a 14-1 record last season with the only loss against the Crimson Tide who they beat in the National Championship. The team lost 15 players because of the NFL draft but the team is still very powerful in offense and defense.
Offensively, the team averaged 38.6 points per game #8 in the nation and recorded 3,778 passing yards and 2,864 rushing yards and ranked #4 in yards per play last season. The quarterback Stetson Bennett will be leading the team to another championship. He had 2,862 passing yards, 29 td's and 7 interceptions.
Defensively, this team was the best of the best ranking #1 in defense in the country and allowed an average of only 10.2 points per game last season. They had to let go their eilte defensive tackles to the NFL but still have some great players like Jalen Carter.
Georgia are 18-1 SU in their last 19 games.
Georgia are 10-0 SU in their last 10 games played in September.
Georgia are 7-0 SU in their last 7 games played in week 1.
Oregon are 8-0 SU in their last 8 games played in September.
Oregon are 8-1 SU in their last 9 games played in week 1.
The Bulldogs will be strong contenders to win the championship again this year among with Alabama. They have plenty of talent in offense and defense but they'll face a renewed Oregon team with an experienced quarteback that can give them quite a battle. 16.5 points are too many to cover specially in Week 1 where the players can start slow. Expect the Ducks to keep this game in a differencial of under 2 touchdowns. Take Oregon to cover the spread.
PICK: Oregon +16.5 (-110)
