We'll receive another annual edition of the Sunshine Showdown when the Florida Gators host the Florida State Seminoles this Sunday.
Florida State got off to an strong start with a massive victory over an experienced Penn Quakers team. The Seminoles shot nearly 50% percent from the field as a unit en route to a 105-70 win.
Florida also got off to a fast start with a strong win over Elon. The Gators took a 23-point lead into the locker room, but they failed to cover the lofty 19-point margin en route to a 74-61 season opening victory.
Florida State (1-0)
The Seminoles will rely on senior guards Anthony Polite and RayQuan Evans for veteran experience and leadership. Both guards shot 5-9 from the field, with Evans pacing the team with five assists.
Houston transfer Caleb Mills will add life to a FSU rotation that loss four core players last season. Mills posted a solid line of 14/5/3 in his first game as a Seminole.
Redshirt senior Malik Osbourne is slated to have a big role this season after replacing Balsa Koprivica. Osbourne paced the team with 18 points and 13 rebounds in the win over Penn.
The Gators got off to a fast start as well with a strong win over Elon. The Gators took a 23-point lead into the locker room, but they failed to cover the lofty 19-point margin en route to a 74-61 season opening victory.
Myreon Jones transferred in from Penn State and got straight to work. The senior guard hit four threes, paced the Gators with 20 points, and grabbed six rebounds.
Colin Castleton and Anthony Duruji give the Gators a sound, experienced front court. Castleton renigged on the NBA Draft and scored 18 points in the opener, while Duruji scored eight points and grabbed seven boards in 26 minutes.
Senior guard Tyree Appleby joins Jones in the backcourt after a solid first season in Gainesville. The former Cleveland State guard scored 14 points in the opener, while hitting three treys.
Florida State looked really good in their opener after losing so much from last year's team, but this will be their first real test. Throw in the rivalry aspect, and it being on the road, and we have elements of an upset here. We feel it will be a contested battle that will come down to the last five minutes, and we like the Gators on their home floor here.
PICK: Florida ML (-110)
