Preview

The San Diego Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks will play the 2nd game of the 4-game series in Phoenix on Friday night. The Dbacks left the Padres on the field with a 3-run home run in the 9th inning. The pitching matchup for the series opener Thursday night was Yu Darvish for San Diego against Madison Bumgarner for the Dbacks.

SAN DIEGO PADRES

The Padres were on their way to win their first game of the season last night but a late 3-run home run took them away that win. The Padres lost because of a bullpen meltdown. San Diego took its two-run advantage into the ninth but Robert Suarez (0-1) — who was making his major league debut — walked the first two batters he faced and then hit Carson Kelly with a pitch to load the bases. Ha-Seong Kim — starting at shortstop in place of injured San Diego star Fernando Tatis Jr. — didn't get a hit but managed to score twice after reaching on a walk and a fielder's choice. He also had a stolen base.

Yu Darvish had an outstanding first game of the season, he was on a no-hitter when the manager Bob Melvin took him out because of the pitching count.

Probable Pitcher:

Sean Manaea (0-0, 0.0 ERA) will take the mound in the 2nd game of the series for the Padres. It appeared Manaea may remain in Oakland to begin the season despite constant trade rumors, but he's now been dealt to San Diego with less than a week before Opening Day. The 30-year-old southpaw joins a rotation that already includes Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, Blake Snell and Mike Clevinger, as the NL West continues to stack up talent. Manaea posted a 3.91 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 194:41 K:BB over 179.1 innings last year and is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2022 campaign.

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

The Dbacks got their first win of the season in the opening day when Seth Beer homered in the 9th inning to walk-off the Padres. Arizona was losing 2-0 but San Diego's bullpen made some mistakes and Christian Walker scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1. And then Beer, in just his 13th big league at-bat, crushed a breaking ball that gave the Diamondbacks a comeback win on National Beer Day in the United States.

Madison Bumgarner made his eighth opening day start and threw two scoreless innings before trouble in the third. He walked four Padres, needing 42 pitches to get through the inning, and Luke Voit's walk forced in Kim to give San Diego a 1-0 lead.

Bumgarner struck out Wil Myers to end the threat, but the pitcher's day was done. He gave up one run and one hit over three innings.

Probable Pitcher:

Merril Kelly (0-0, 0-0 ERA) will be on the mound for the Dbacks in the 2nd game of the 4-game series. Merrill Kelly struggled on the mound last season. He finished the season with a 7-11 record and a 4.44 ERA. although he pitched well in three starts against the Padres, going 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA in 16 innings.

BETTING TRENDS

San Diego are 1-9 SU in their last 10 games.

San Diego are 1-9 SU in their last 10 games on the road.

Arizona are 6-14 SU in their last 20 games.

Arizona are 5-11 SU in their last 16 games at home.

Prediction

The Dbacks stole the win to the Padres last night because of some bullpen errors and the late walk-off home run. Kelly did well against the Padres last season but he should get around 3 innings on this game and I don't really trust the Dbacks bullpen. Sean Manaea dominated the Dbacks in his last 2 games allowing just 1 run in 11.1 innings. I'm going with the Padres to get win this time.
