The Tampa Rays travel to Baltimore to take on the Orioles in what should be an easy game for Tampa. This will be the first game of their three game series. The Rays have gone 17-2 against this O’s team this year when they have faced each other.
Tampa Bay will roll out a plethora of lefties today to take on Matt Harvey. They’re coming into this game winning their last 4 games and putting up 27 runs in the process. To say they have the Orioles number is an understatement and look for them to continue their dominance once again.
The O’s come into this game after putting up an impressive 31 runs in their last 3 games. During this onslaught offensive firepower they were able to end their 19 game losing streak against the Angels. They have now won 2 in a row and look to continue this momentum against a Tampa Bay team that has had their number all year.
Shane McClanahan (8-4, 3.63 ERA) will take on the O’s today for the Rays. The young lefty has been good this year after being called up. He comes in to this game with a 1.28 WHIP and 3.51 XFIP. This is a tougher matchup for McClanahan than many might think as the O’s are near the top of the league against left handed pitching despite their poor record. Although they are good against lefties, I expect McClanahan to have a quality start and pick up his 9th win of the season with the backing from his offense.
Matt Harvey (6-13, 6.27 ERA) will be the guy to try and slow down the Rays today. Harvey has not been good this year and I expect that to continue today. The old right hander comes into this game with a 1.54 WHIP and 4.94 XFIP. Harvey with have a tough time on his hands navigating this lefty heavy line up of the Rays. Only having a 17.4% strikeout rate and giving up quality contact he will need to hope the Rays forget how to hit or he could be in for a long (or short) night.
The dominance the Rays have shown this year should continue today as they should have no problem against Matt Harvey and the O’s terrible bullpen. The Orioles right handed bats could cause some damage against the Rays young lefty. When you look at this matchup the Rays have by far the better bats and pitching and should win this game with ease.
PICK: Tampa Bay Rays -1.5 (-152)
