Preview

Tonight we have the Rangers in the Bronx to take on the Yankees.  The Rangers enter this game firmly out of the playoff picture as their pitching and hitting as been abysmal all year.  I don't expect much to change against this Yankees team.  The Yankees enter this game 0.5 games back of an AL wildcard spot. They currently sit 1.5 games back of the Red Sox and 0.5 games back from the Blue Jays.  They'll look to pick up some easy wins against a weak and depleted Rangers team.

Pitching matchup

Rangers

Dane Dunning (5-8, 4.28 ERA) will be on the mound for the Rangers when they take on the Yankees.  Dunning enters this game with a 1.43 WHIP and 3.96 XFIP.  This season he carries a 22.3% strikeout rate along with a 7.7% walk rate. Dunning has been decent this year, he carries a 60% groundball rate against right handed hitters, a very good rate.  Both sides of the plate have been able to get to him with some contact though, and left handed hitters have been able to hit him hard.  His last 2 outting came out of the bullpen so he will most likely be limited in this one.  He will look to do his best against a loaded Yankees lineup before handing the ball off to the bullpen. 

Yankees

Jordan Montgomery (5-6, 3.63 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Yankees when they take on the visiting Rangers.  Montgomery enters this game with a 1.25 WHIP and 4.10 XFIP. This season he carries a nice 25% strikeout rate along with a 7.4% walk rate.  Montgomery has been solid this year when he's been called upon. He has had success against both sides of the plate, though giving up some power to right handed hitters.  He has had no issues in same handed matchups as he has limited opposing hitters in the split very nicely this year.  He should have no problems with this weak Rangers offense and should get the Yankees back on track to pick up a much needed win.

Prediction

Both pitchers have been good this year, Dunning will be limited in this one before he hands the ball off to the bullpen.  I'll back the better overall team here in the Yankees as their bats and pitching is much more elite than that of the Rangers.
