The Texas Rangers are at Fenway for the final game of the three game series against the Boston Red Sox as Sunday’s game was cancelled due to Tropical Storm Henri. The Red Sox took game one 6-0 before dropping 10-1 to the Rangers on Saturday. The Rangers had dropped 4 straight before that, while the Red Sox have now dropped 4 of 5.
Rangers bats came alive Saturday, scoring 10, thanks largely in part to 5 errors by the Red Sox. They had scored just 10 runs total in their previous 4 games.
The Red Sox batters have hit a fund, scoring only 12 runs in their last 5 games, albeit 2 of those were only 7 inning games.
Kolby Allard (3-10, 4.88 ERA) takes the mound for the Rangers. He is not great, with a 12.38 ERA 2018, 4.96 ERA 2019, 7.75 ERA 2020 and now a 4.88 ERA 2021. He has, however, had a good August. In his 3 starts this month, he’s gone a combined 18.1 innings, giving up only 7 earned runs on 19 hits and no walks. He’s light on strikeouts, with only 9 in those three starts. On the 7 earned runs he’s given up, 5 were home runs. Red Sox batters have only seen Allard 8 times, getting 3 hits and 1 home run.
Nathan Eovaldi (10-8, 3.91 ERA) will pitch for the Red Sox. The veteran comes off a 3.72 ERA 2020, and in his 9 previous seasons has generally pitched a high 3 / low 4 ERA, except in 2019 where he had a 5.99 ERA. He’s had a mixed August, with a terrible first game at the Toronto Blue Jays, before pitching two good games, going a combined 12.0 innings, with 3 earned runs on 10 hits and 2 walks. He’s struck out 20 batters in his 16.2 combined innings in August. In May against the Rangers he went 6.0 innings, giving up only 1 earned run on 4 hits and 2 walks. Rangers batters have gone 7 for 29 (.241 AVG) against Eovaldi, with no home runs.
The line for this is too big for us to take the Red Sox, instead we're focusing on total runs. Before yesterday, the Rangers averaged 2.5 runs per game in their previous 4, while the Red Sox have only averaged 2.4 runs per game in their last 5. Both of these pitchers have pitched well in August, and Eovaldi held the Rangers to 1 earned run in 6.0 innings in May. The over / under at 10.0 seems too high.
PICK: Under 10.0 (-110)
