Preview
The Nationals are in Truist Park to start off their divisional three-game series against the Atlanta Braves. The Nats lost their last series 3-2 to the Mets after being swept by the Phillies. As a result, Washington still occupies the last spot in the NL East with no chance of a postseason spot in sight. The Braves top the division but are only a game and a half ahead of the Phillies and didn't help themselves by losing 2-1 to the Rockies in their last series after being swept by the Dodgers. Atlanta is only a few games away from clinching the division so they'll look to wrap up that playoff position beginning with this series.
Pitching matchup
Nationals
Paolo Espino (4-4, 4.08 ERA) Right-handed pitcher Paolo Espino is slated to make his 15th start of the season. The third-year major is averaging a career-best ERA of 4.08 in 2021 with a WHIP of 1.18. He's already faced the Braves five times this season pitching for nine innings and has been hit eight times for five ERs. He's walked two batters while striking out seven,
Braves
Max Fried (11-7, 3.51 ERA) Max Fried will be back on the mound for the 24th time this season. The veteran pitcher has a 3.51 ERA in 2021 coming off of his 2.25 ERA in 2020. He also has a WHIP of 1.18 in 2021. Fried pitched for 22.2 innings in five games against the Nats this season, having 12 ERs off 30 hits with 28 batters struck as opposed to only five walked.
Prediction
The Braves are looking to get back on track and head into the postseason with the right momentum. With everything to play for and nothing to chase for the Nats, expect the Braves to make a statement tonight.
