The LA Angels play host to the Padres for the final game of this two-game tilt. San Diego won emphatically by shutting out the Angels 5-0 last night. It was their first win in five games after going down to the Phillies and then being swept 3-0 by the Dodgers at home. The Angels are now on a three-game losing streak where they're averaging only 2.33 runs per game. The Padres are still in the wild card hunt and are trying to keep pace with the Reds so expect them to come out as fiercely as they did last night. The Angels are coming off of a 2-1 series defeat to bottom-of-the-league Baltimore and being swept 3-0 by the Indians prior to that.
Ryan Weathers (4-6, 5.27 ERA) Ryan Weathers is slated to start his 17th game of the season for San Diego. The second-year pitcher has an ERA of 5.27 over 23 games and 80.1 innings, during which time he's had 27 hits with 20 ERs, 26 walks and 61 strikeouts. In the last month, Weathers hasn't been extremely effective surrendering 27 hits for 20 ERs in 13.2 innings.
Jose Suarez (5-7, 4.06 ERA) Jose Suarez will get the ball first up for the Angels. It's only his 9th start despite playing 17 games. He has an ERA of 4.06 in 2021 better than his rookie year total of 7.11 back in 2019 through 19 games. In his last game alone, through 6 innings he had six hits off of his pitching with three ERs and has walked two batters while striking out four.
The Angels bats will continue to struggle. They've put up a single point over their last two games and the Padres have failed to put up double-digit runs on the board for the entire month of August. In addition, the total has been under in eight of San Diego's last 10 so expect that result to repeat itself tonight.
