Preview

The San Diego Padres and the San Francisco will begin their series of the season in the Bay this evening. Both in-state rivals jumped out to good starts this season, with the Padres taking three of four from Arizona, and the Giants winning two of three over Miami.

The Padres slipped on opening night, but they've responded well with three strong wins and covers, and appear to have to a lot of fight despite the absence of All-Star slugger Fernando Tatis. Jurickson Profar has homered in back-to-back games, and his grand slam last night marked the first of his career.

The Giants almost swept the Marlins last week, but they've jumped out to an underwhelming 0-3 record against the spread early. Each of the first three contests being decided by one run defines Giants baseball, but look for the bats to start warming up soon.

Pitching matchup

Padres

Nick Martinez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make the bullpen start for San Diego this evening. The veteran reliever spent the last four seasons in the NPB, posting 10-11 record's in both the 2018 and 2019 seasons for the Nippon-Ham Fighters.

Giants

Alex Wood (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will get take the bump San Francisco. The ten-year veteran enjoyed a successful first season in the Bay last year, posting a 10-4 record with a 3.83 ERA, while striking out 152 over 138.2 innings of work. Wood recorded his third double-digit win season with a third different team, and if he can stay healthy he could be in for his second All-Star appearance.

Prediction

The Giants come into this one with advantages on the mound, at the plate, and home field. The Padres functioned well without Fernando Tatis in the desert last week, but things certainly won't come as easy in the bay this week. Good spot for the Giants here.

Take San Fran's run line for this NL West battle.

PICK: Giants -1.5 (+135)
