It's NL East vs NL West as the Nationals head to Colorado to begin a three-game series with the Rockies. It's the penultimate series of the regular season for two teams already eliminated from playoff contention. The Nats are coming off of the back of a 3-0 series sweep by the Reds and will try to avoid finishing at the bottom of their division sitting currently in 5th and a single game behind the Marlins. The Rockies were also swept in their last series at home to the Giants meaning that they've now lost 4 games in a row. In that four-game stretch, they're averaging allowing 6.75 runs per game. For Coloraod, it's just about trying to have the strongest end to their season.
Josiah Gray (1-2, 5.92 ERA) Josiah Gray will start his 12th game of the season. The first-year major league pitcher has a 5.92 in 12 games this season coming through 59.1 innings. So far, 19.1 of those innings have come in September and Gray has given 19 hits resulting in 18 ERs and struck out 19 batters compared to walking 12. He's pitching 9.1 innings in 2 games against the Rockies in 2021 giving up 6 hits for 7 ERs and with 8 walks and 11 strikeouts.
German Marquez (12-10, 4.32 ERA) Colorado's 6th-year pitcher German Marquez will make start number 32 this season. He has a 4.32 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP in 2021. The right-hander, who leads the league in completed games has pitched 19 innings in 4 games this month and claimed 16 strikeouts with only 8 walks while surrendering 25 hits for 13 ERs. He also pitched 4 innings against the Nats this season and in that game gave up 8 hits for 6 ERs with a single strikeout and 2 walks.
The Nats since being shut out by the Rockies 10 days ago have actually averaged 5.25 runs per game over an 8-game stretch. The Rockies bats have struggled in their last two series albeit those were against two playoff-bound teams. Added to that, the last series between these two clubs in mid-September, saw only one game go surpass the current over for tonight. The over / under at 11.5 just seems too high a total to be achieved in tonight's matchup.
PICK: Under 11.5 (-105)
