The AL West division-leading Houston Astros are back in Petco Park for game two of three against the Padres.  Houston took game one last night 6-3 thanks to a two-run homer from Kyle Tucker in the 8th inning.  They have a five and a half game lead over the A's in their division as they try to lock up the top spot and cruise into the playoffs.  The Padres sit 3rd in the NL West and have all but closed in on the Reds for the second and final wild card slot.  San Diego's playoff hopes are still very much alive so they will need to recover from their two-game slide in order to keep the pressure on in that NL wild card race.

Pitching matchup

Framber Valdez (9-4, 2.91 ERA) Framber Valdez is in line for his 18th start of the season.  Valdez has a 9-4 record boasting a 2.91 ERA with only 34 ERs from 85 hits from 105 innings pitched in 2021.  He had a 3.57 ERA in 2020,  5.86 in 2019 and 2.19 from eight games in his first season in the majors in 2018.  He's faced the Padres already this season having an ERA of 2.25 in that game.  He threw for four innings and had one ER off two hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Joe Musgrove (9-8, 2.85 ERA) Joe Musgrove will be first to the mound for San Diego.  It'll be his 27th start of the season and he's started all but one of those games.  He has a 2.85 ERA in 2021, bettering his season-best of 3.86 in 2020.  Musgrove did pitch for five innings in a game against the Astros in 2021.  He wasn't hit and had zero walks and managed to strike out three batters.

The Padres are still fighting to cement their place as a wild card entry to the playoffs.  Last night's narrow defeat is an encouraging sign.

PICK: Padres -1.5 (+190)
